Speaking With….. Alex G!!

Hey guys, sorry for the delay in posting this, but finally we have an amazing artist and equally amazing interview lined up for you this week! We are of course talking about youtube sensation Alex G!! For those of you who have yet to hear of Alex (where have you been!?!?) here is a brief introduction for you.

Alex Gronlund is a singer/songwriter from Colorado, United States, who shot to fame after posting videos of her covers and original songs on youtube, demonstrating her beautiful vocals as well as guitar playing skills. Her first cover was of Bruno Mars’ ‘Marry You’. Aside from her singing, her bubbly and energetic personality has helped her gain a massive fanbase! Alex has went from strength to strength since her first upload in December 2010, and has now amassed an amazing 38million total upload views and counting on her channel, gaining nearly 235,000  subscribers! Alex has teamed up with other youtube artists such as Tyler Ward, who coincidentally she is neighbours with, to create some amazing covers. The rise to fame resulted in Alex releasing her very own EP last month entitled ‘Found’ which features 4 of her original songs which you can buy on iTunes. Due to this release and her amazing friendship with Tyler, Alex will be supporting Tyler on his tour of Europe so make such you go and see her!

Anyway, here is what she had to say to your questions!

How did you first get into music?

I have sang all my life, but I was too scared to let anyone hear me. Finally one day I decided I wanted people to know that I could sing. It was frustrating being scared of something that I knew I had some talent in! So I took a risk and uploaded a video of me singing to a karaoke track on Youtube. Then I found Tyler Ward and was a huge fan of him. I entered a Tyler Ward contest and from that we found out we were living in the same neighborhood for 6 years. He told me to come over and do a song and that was the start of everything!

What is your favourite song you have covered on youtube?

Probably ‘We Are Young’. I produced it all by myself, and it did so well! It was supposed to be just a fun cover with my friend Jon Duckworth… but it turned into magic!

What are your inspirations in music and in life, that make you the person you are today?

Taylor Swift has always been my musical inspiration. Her genuine-ness has always appealed to me. I love that she has stayed true to herself and how honest she is with her lyrics. Ed Sheeran is a huge inspiration as well. He’s just so incredibly and genuinely talented. I would love to be a “girl Ed Sheeran”. I just love people that don’t do what everyone else does. I am the kind of person that will never sacrifice my values no matter the situation.

Who is your idol?

Carol Burnett. Enough said ;)

If your name wasn’t Alex, what would you like to be called?

Hmm… Probably something magical. Like Jasmine or something haha. I also love the name Emma for some reason.

What countries will you be visiting on your European tour?

Hmm… Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Belgium, and Austria… not in that order though.

What will it be like touring with Tyler?

It will either be smelly or loud. Haha jk… it will be awesome. We got to be really close friends on the last US/CAN tour. We’re kinda the same person and our humor can be kinda ridiculous. But it’s always super fun :)

Are you afraid to lose the intimacy with your fans when you skyrocket to fame?

I have noticed that the bigger and bigger my channel becomes the harder it is to respond to everyone. But I will NEVER not notice my fans, and I will try my hardest always to make them feel appreciated. I’m here because of them.

Would you rather marry an elephant or turn into a seal?

Probably turn into a seal. I bet they have neat lives. Full of… water… and… stuff..

Would you rather wrestle a horse sized duck or a duck sized horse?

Considering the dramatic size difference, I’d say a duck sized horse would be easiest to conquer.

Do you plan on doing any further tours in the future?

Of course! I love touring. I wanna visit the places I haven’t been to yet. I love playing for my fans :) .

What are your interests outside of music?

I actually really love Musicals. I guess that’s outside of music… I just love watching them and such. They’re magical ;) . I also love being active. I used to play softball and am told to be very competitive haha.

Did you have any nicknames when you were growing up?

On the softball field they called me Speedy G. I was pretty darn fast, I must say! Everyone also called me Alexandra. Which isn’t a nickname… but it’s just weird to think about people calling me by my full name.

What does the future hold for yourself?

Hopefully a life similar to what it is now. Successful, doing what I love and being surrounded by people who really care about me. I would love to grow my music career a lot more though.

Any messages for your fans?

See you Europeans in Europe on tour!! Also I will be sure to come back to a US/CAN tour if not this year then the next!! Haha :) And thank you SO much for the support with the EP. It surpassed my expectations by a lot and I’m astounded by how amazing you guys are. Let’s hang out, okay?

We would like to give a massive thanks to Alex for answering your questions and taking time out of her busy schedule for this. We hope you all enjoyed it!

Hey guys, it’s that time of the week again! Time for another ‘Cover Of The Week’ and this week, we have a world class cover from arguably the best artist on youtube… Any guesses? Mabye if I mentioned ‘zeldaxlove64‘ you might guess it??

If your still struggling, our first question is, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!? Our artist this week is of course…. Christina Grimmie! For those of you who don’t know of Christina, she is an 18 year old singer/songwriter and pianist known and loved for her covers and video’s on youtube. To date, she is one of the most popular youtube artists with an amazing 1,683,401 subscribers and over 300million video views. Her most popular cover is her version of Katy Perry’s ‘ET’ which has amassed nearly 15million views itself!

Her unique covers, energentic and bubbly personality, and passion for music has amazed many fans which in turn escalated her into stardom. Her fanbase has grown and grown, now having and army of ‘Frands’ who worship her, and to whom Christina has almost a mutual Friendship with, hence the ‘Frands‘. She has then went on to release her debut album entitled ‘Find Me’ which charted #11 in Billboard’s digital chart. She is currently working hard on her second album whilst continually posting more youtube video’s for #TeamGrimmie to enjoy.

The cover we chose this week, was Christina’s version of ‘Titanium, originally by David Guetta and Sia. The reason we chose this cover is due to the fact that she sings with so much power, yet manages to control her voice exceptionally well. This coupled with her piano playing skills, stripping the song down and making it more melodic, touches a nerve with the viewer. In our opinion this is Christina’s best cover yet, showing she has the potential to be a huge success in the future. So Frands, as promised, here is Christina’s cover below:

Amazing huh? Feel free to keep hitting the replay button, we certainly have been. Be sure to keep a look out for Christina in years to come. You can keep up with all of Christina’s latest video’s and covers by subscribing to her youtube channel HERE.

You can also interact with Christina by tweeting her HERE, liking her facebook page HERE and checking out her official website HERE.

Hopefully all of you Frands out there enjoyed this post, please follow us on twitter to help support artists such as Christina, and keep a look out at the exciting news and interviews that will be coming your way in the future.

From then on, he has been labelled the ‘one man band’ due to the vast array of instruments he plays and edits into his youtube videos. In The Meantime, check out what he had to say about the questions you provided!

Q.  Who are your inspirations in the music industry?

I’ve always been inspired by artists like Ben Folds and John Mayer, they have a very genuine approach to writing pop songs.

Q. What gave you the idea to start making youtube videos?

I started creating videos for fun and was surprised when I began to receive such a strong response from the community. I just did what I wanted to do, and hoped people would love the content I created as much as I did… I’d always been creating music the way it’s presented in my videos, I guess I just found a new way to show the world.

Q. Did you ever think you would receive such a positive response from the videos you post?

I had no idea, I didn’t have very much experience producing videos, I never thought my channel would take off the way it did.

Q. How and when did you learn to play such a variety of instruments that are displayed in your videos?

Throughout my youth I just sort of picked up new instruments and figured them out. That’s how I am with most of life, I enjoy experimenting and mastering new things.

Q. What do you think of the #gootiescooties and #AlexGootArmy?

I love all of the support, I always think it’s really cool when a fan base labels themselves… I’ve personally always liked the idea of the “Goot Troop”, ha.

Q. Have you ever had a surreal or memorable moment with a fan?

Anytime I meet a fan that has truly connected with my music, it’s always special to hear how my songs have been interpreted and applied to different peoples lives.

Q. If you could have one wish in the world, what would it be?

A never ending pizza.

Q. What are your other interests aside from music?

I love building computers and hanging out with my close friends, I love doing “normal guy stuff”.

Q. If you could bring one musician back from the dead to work with, who would it be and why?

I’m not sure how to answer this, I guess I would say Freddie Mercury, he was an incredibly inspirational musician.

Q. Have you ever googled yourself?

I think we all have at this point!

Q. What track do you own that you are most embarassed to admit?

I’m not really embarrassed of any song in my iTunes library, I don’t think anyone should ever be ashamed of enjoying music.

Q. What does the future hold for Alex Goot?

More songs, more videos, more tours, more of everything! I’m just getting started!

We would like to Thanks Alex and his management for allowing this to happen, hopefully you all enjoyed it! As promised, below is Alex’s cover of Gavin DeGraw’s ‘Not Over You’.

Cover Of The Week …

For this weeks cover we have chosen one of the most talked about youtube artists in 2012. With nearly 1 million subscribers and over 285 million video views to date, we are of course talking about Tyler Ward!

Tyler Ward is a 23 year old singer/singwriter who shot to fame for his youtube covers and also original songs, becoming one of the most subscribed artists on youtube. He has also worked with several other youtube artists such as Christina Grimmie, Megan Nicole and Alex G. He is now working on his own album and touring around Europe and North America.

The cover we have chosen is Cher Lloyd’s ‘Want You Back’. We are massive fans of Cher, and so are America judging by her recent chart success in the States. We chose this cover as Tyler makes it his own. Most of the covers try to emulate Cher, however this cover brings a ‘Rockier’ version, mix that with a little humour, crazy dance moves and and insane facial expression and you have got an amazing video!

If you love the cover as much as us you can download it >> HERE <<

If you want to Connect with twitter you can find him on Twitter, Facebook, and KEEK and be sure to check out his website for details of tour dates

Speaking with….. Amy Colalella

Hey guys! For our next interview we caught up with youtube sensation Amy Colalella and got you to send in your questions for Amy to answer.

Amy is a 19 year old singer/songwriter from a small town near Pittsburgh in the US. Her passion for music inspired her to set up a youtube account where she frequently posts videos of her singing covers and original material for her masses of subscribers to view. To date, Amy has nearly 10 million video views!! Amy’s most popular cover on youtube is her accoustic cover of  ‘Tik Tok ‘ by Ke$ha which you can view below!  Here’s what happened when we caught up with her..

Q. Have you always enjoyed the art of music and how did you get into music?

I know that it is such a cliché thing to say… but I don’t remember a time that I didn’t sing or love music. More than anything, I thought my dream to sing was unrealistic…. so, I kept it a secret! I had only sang in the shower & in the car until I started posting on YouTube… then everyone found out and it terrified me!! But, I have no regrets : )

Q. Any loves, other then music?

Hmm….. Art!! I love to draw. Photography, Fashion, Sports, Tumblr (hahaha)…. I have an incredible group of friends I’ve been with almost every day this summer, and I absolutely love hanging out with them. I could sit under the stars for HOURS with them and never have a dull moment.

Q. Describe yourself in 3 words..

    Passionate, Creative, Shy

Q. Your interested in fashion, who do you get your inspiration from?

Yes, I am !!! I find a ton of things that I love on Tumblr. It’s hard to find sources for everything of course…. but the ideas for outfits and all; there is so much!!! Especially since people on Tumblr are from all over the world…. there is a really sweet mixture of stuff. Also, on lookbook.nu and weheartit.com…. some pretty sweet things. I also wish I could have almost every single item off of nastygal.com !!!

Q. What is the best advice you have ever been given?

I had just sent one of my friends a recording from a song… I was talking about how I am SUCH a perfectionist with it and she said, “I need to tell you something right now. God has given you an incredible voice. Don’t hide it from the world. There is only one perfectionist in this world, and His name is Jesus, and you are perfect in His eyes. You’re an incredible singer. I loved hearing you sing that, because it was so honest and sincere. I heard your heart, and I am amazed.” I screen capped what she said and will save it forever!! Sometimes I get SO caught up in the technicalities of a song that I forget WHY I’m even doing it in the first place. It’s not about being perfect, but about heart.

Q. First song you remember performing?

My dad always tells me I used to sing, “Shout to the Lord,” & “I am a Friend of God” when I was way little at church……. but, I don’t really remember! I remember the first time I sang in front of certain friends/family… but I’ve never really “performed” to say!!! I have to just go with my first YouTube cover… “This is Me” by Demi Lovato. Putting myself out there on YouTube was one of the scariest things I had ever done.

Q. Any guilty pleasures?

Jersey Shore. And most of the reality shows on E!……. I just can’t even loving them.

Q. What’s the most embarassing thing you are willing to admit?

Hahaha hmmm….. I’m very much a, “what you see is what you get,” type of person… but, I’d say I definitely dance around my room. I don’t dance in public, I’m so uncoordinated it is pathetic. I don’t have moves, so…. I pretend to when nobody is watching.

Q. Did you ever think that you would become as popular as you are on youtube?

Neeeever!!!! Everything about the YouTube experience and the doors it has opened has been so unexpected for me… I had a friend tell me in 6th grade, “We hear ourselves differently than others hear us.” So, that is why I recorded myself!! I wanted to see how I “actually” sounded. I’m not sure how I ended up putting that up on YouTube…. but that’s how it started!! When people started commenting and subscribing…. I really was so surprised. I always considered myself a closet singer because nobody knew that I loved it, hahaha. I am still so taken aback by the support I have. Some of the comments I get have actually put me to tears because of how sweet people are.

Q. What can we expect from yourself muscially in the next 2 or 3 years?

Hopefully, something professionally recorded. I get so many comments about putting stuff on iTunes, well…. I mean firstly, I have no idea how to really go about doing that!! But, I also would just feel so guilty about people buying such crap quality stuff!! I’d want people to have the best quality they could for a recording instead of some webcam nonsense! I’m also starting to sing on the worship team at church, so who knows what doors God will open up through that : )

Q. You recently were involved in a car accident, how did you feel knowing you couldn’t sing for a long period of time.

Ohhhh my goodness, I couldn’t stand it! I actually was just getting over a pretty bad cold… I hadn’t sang for about a week already, and the day of the accident I was late picking up my mom because I was learning, “Safe and Sound” by Taylor Swift & The Civil Wars on guitar… I had just been able to sing again and then….. months without it was really, very awful. It made me realize HOW much I absolutely LOVE music and never want to go without it.

Q. What one song do you wish you had written?

Oh, dear…. there’s too many. One off the top of my head I can think of, “Gravity,” by Sara Bareilles. Everything about that song is too phenomenal.

Q. Are you currently working on new material and are we likely to see an album in the future?

Ahhh, just covers for now!! I so wish!! Right now no doors are open for that… but hopefully one day : )

Q. Why did you decide to put yourself on youtube and did anyone influence your decision to do so?

I think because of how… sheltered I was with my voice…. I wanted to know what people thought. I wanted to know if I was good or not, in a sense. In middle school I auditioned for different singing things, and I didn’t make the cuts. I had this dream in me and I wanted to know if it was possible. At the time, YouTube was such a different WORLD compared to now. I was never expecting to even really get feedback or anywhere with it, but I know that I did want it. Some of the people I had first watched on YouTube….. Justin Bieber, do you know him? … hehehe just kidding, Alyssa Bernal, Brittany Nicole, Ally Rhodes, Jessica Sanchez, Aj Rafael, Gabe Bondoc, Megan and Liz, Kina Grannis… Jennifer Chung… Savannah Outten… I was so fascinated by what they were doing and somehow I ended up giving it a try : )

We would like to send a massive thanks to Amy for gratefully agreeing to answer these questions send in by her fans, and wish her all the best for the future. Somehow, we don’t think it will be the last we hear of her… Big future!!

If you don’t already, give Amy a subscribe on her youtube channel.

You can also follow her on twitter and of course her tumblr
